Shopify: USA Export Duties Set Up

Adjusting Prices on Shopify using Markets to Collect USA Tariffs

This step-by-step guide explains how to set up Shopify Markets to automatically collect the 10% USA export duty. This ensures that US customers pay the necessary tariffs at checkout, preventing delivery delays or unexpected charges upon arrival.

Step 1: Create a USA Market

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin.

  2. Go to Settings (gear icon in the bottom left) > Markets.

  3. Click Create Market in the top right.

  4. Name the market "USA".

  5. Click Add countries/regions, search for and select United States, then click Done.

Step 2: Enable Currency Customization

  1. Within your new USA market settings, find the Products and pricing section.

  2. Ensure that Currency conversion is enabled.

  3. This will automatically display prices in USD for your US customers based on the current exchange rate.

Step 3: Create a Custom Catalog

  1. Under the Catalog section of your USA market, click the "+" (plus) icon to create a new catalog.

  2. The title will default to "USA" and the currency will be set to USD.

  3. This catalog allows you to set specific pricing rules that only apply to the US market.

Step 4: Adjust Pricing for Export Duties

  1. In the Pricing section of your USA catalog, look for Overall price adjustment.

  2. Change the adjustment type to Increase.

  3. Enter 10% in the percentage field.

    • Note: Live Ink recommends 10% to cover the mandatory export duty fee for garments sent to the US.

Step 5: Assign Products and Save

  1. Ensure the setting "Automatically include new products" is selected. This ensures any future designs you sync from Live Ink are automatically covered by this rule.

  2. Review your settings to ensure US customers will now see a price that is 10% higher than your base price.

  3. Click Save in the top right.

Important Notes:

  • Why 10%? Live Ink automatically applies a 10% Export Duty fee to all orders shipping to the USA (based on the pre-VAT garment price). Adjusting your Shopify prices ensures this cost is passed to the customer so your profit margins remain protected.

  • De Minimis Changes: As of August 2025, low-value shipments to the US are no longer duty-free; these settings are essential for all commercial shipments.

  • Large Orders: Orders with a value over approximately £150 may still be subject to additional local import taxes. Customers remain liable for these extra charges if they exceed that threshold.
